What Exactly Is A Good Leader?

Ceramic Tile Distributors Association 07/18/2008 Public

Webinar for the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association.

Managing people is never easy; leading them is even harder. What can you learn from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs or Hershey and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership? For eaxmple, that because motivation is founded on needs and, as Maslow tells us, becasue needs are met in the order that they are pre-potent, also based on changes in the environment, expecting an associate to be motivated by sales goals or even rewards (good for associates at the self-esteem level) when they are going through a personal difficult time (i.e., when they are operating in the belongingness and love level) might be an impossible task and that helping them address personal issues first would work better.

Or, learn that to expect an associate who has just been promoted to perform at the top only because they did so well in their previous position is a mistake, as they still need to be told how, when, and what to do because it is a new role for them. In essence, Blanchard is teaching us that Leadership and Management are dependent on the job maturity level of the person being managed or led and that there are 4 levels of job maturity people can have and each requires a different amount of time and effort spent in ‘telling' vs. delegating and ‘participating’ vs. ‘selling’.

Also, learn about powerful motivators for individuals and teams.
